With 2011 drawing to a close, it is an opportune moment to examine the political and policy challenges that lay ahead for the European Union in 2012. On January 1st, Denmark’s centre-left government headed by Statsminister Helle Thorning-Schmidt will assume the six-month Presidency of the European Union. Denmark has outlined a five point plan it says will guide its Presidency:

1. Creating economic growth in the EU and ensuring a sound economy
2. Climate, energy, environment and agriculture
3. Justice and Home affairs
4. A strong global role for the EU
5. Negotiations on the EU’s long-term budget.
