Now’s the time to engage with the European Parliament

Martin Schulz was this morning elected as President of the European Parliament, defeating two British candidates; Conservative Nirj Deva and Liberal Democratic MEP Diana Wallis.
While little-know outside of political circles, the position of European Parliament President is an important one. For the next thirty months, the 56 year old German socialist will take the lead in setting the Parliament’s legislative agenda, signing off EU regulations and directives and representing the views of MEPs at European summits.
